You have bills to pay, deadlines to meet, weight to lose and then there’s the significant other who just won’t chill out. When the stress piles up, it piles up real high and then the age old stress-busters (read: deep breathing, herbal tea) just do not work.
Try these unusual de-stressing techniques which will definitely work:
#1 Get Down And Dirty
You spend your life in a crazy vortex of immaculate order. Your plans are made, structures are created and you are always prepared. Not just your work day, even your breaks are planned (and closely monitored). This, alone can cause extreme stress.
Imagine how freeing it would be to just forget about order and get downright dirty. Get a friend and go jump in a mud puddle till you both fall down laughing. Walk barefoot in the grass or roll around in it for that matter. Just break out of your cleanliness rut and the stress will melt away in a jiffy.
#2 Sing Away The Blues
This one’s scientifically backed. The Journal of Behavioral Medicine published a study stating that singing (however badly) reduces the levels of cortisol, a stress triggering hormone while increasing the levels of oxytocin, a chemical responsible for relaxation.
So, next time you feel stressed out, draw the curtains or get in the shower and just summon the award-winning pop singer in you. Just make sure your roommate has noise cancelling headphones on, or be ready to pay the entire rent.
#3 Draw A Bath
Remember Chandler in the tub with his boat? He outruns Monica to the bath she drew for herself just to get some relaxation going. If you too want to do away with stress that desperately, it’s time you soaked in some suds with your own scented bath salts.
While you’re in there, try not to think about anything except the sensation of the bath itself. Amidst the bubbles, the warm water and your own breathing, you will forget what you were stressed out about in the first place.
#4 Get A Stress Stone
Find a stone with a smooth surface and rub it with your fingers next time you start getting worked up. Tell yourself that you’re channelling all your stress into the stone which will store it inside for good.
This is essentially you tricking your mind into thinking you’re transferring your worry out of your body and into a stone. People might think you’re crazy for carrying around a stone but hey, you’re too relaxed to care!
#5 Swear By It
You already do it in your head. Now, you have to do it out loud. There’s something about swearing that makes your feel at peace with stressful situations. Remember Geet from Jab We Met swearing at her inconsiderate pig of an ex? That’s exactly what you need to do.
What you need: Excellent swear vocabulary, Empty room.
What you definitely do not need: Parents, Kids, Boss.
