Airbnb has positioned itself as a hotel killer for more than ten years. However, it is now starting to enter the traditional hotel business. It has been investing and acquiring hotel booking sites including India’s hotel giant Oyo Rooms. Airbnb will now help RXR realty operate a hotel at 75 Rockefeller Plaza which is a 1940’s office building in Midtown. This deal is one of its kind for Airbnb as it has been battling New York’s government because its business model encouraged homeowners and tenants to violate rental laws. RXR plans to convert ten floors of the Rockefeller Plaza into high-end apartment-style suites with a diverse mix of amenities. It will feature various amenities like access to a private social club, business center on the property’s top floor, co-working areas, event space, restaurants and more. According to an Airbnb’s spokesperson, it does not have a financial stake in the partnership with RXR. However, it will be featuring 200 rooms on its heavily used listing platform.
