Is it safe to use cloves during pregnancy?
When consumed as a food ingredient, cloves are said to be safe. However, be wary of these side effects if clove is used in the form of oil or supplement:
- Consumption of clove oil in large quantities may induce uterine contractions. It may lead to premature labour.
- Cloves can also cause allergic reactions during pregnancy.
- Overconsumption of clove may lead to intestinal bleeding, breathing troubles, diarrhoea, seizures, increased mouth sensitivity, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and even liver or kidney failure in extreme cases.
- Avoid the application of clove oil as it may lead to sensitive skin.
- Don’t use clove oil for treating toothaches or other common ailments during pregnancy.
It is always advisable to consult your physician in case of even the slightest discomforts.
Ways to Use
There are various ways to consume cloves. However, be cautious while using them when pregnant.
- Boil a few clove buds in water. Inhale the steams to get relief from respiratory problems.
- To reduce oral bacteria and a fresh breath, directly chew clove buds.
- Make clove tea by boiling a few buds in water. Drink it post-meals to facilitate digestion.
Over 70% of expectant mothers experience nausea and morning sickness. Morning sickness is caused due to changes in beta HCG hormones. Dr. Vandana Gawde, a Mumbai based gynaecologist, advises women to resort to home remedies to curb such symptoms. She emphasizes the use of cloves along with cardamom and honey for instant relief. Avoid using clove oil during pregnancy as it is not known if it’s safe for the baby.
