How does Donepezil work?

How to Take Donepezil?

  • Donepezil medicine is available in tablet form in various strengths (5mg, 10mg and 23.5mg).
  • When taken in oral form, it can be administered with or without food but at a fixed time everyday preferably in the evening.
  • When taken in tablet form, swallow the tablet as a whole with fluids. Do not chew, break, or crush as it may interfere with its rate of absorption.
  • When administered as orally disintegrating tablet, allow the tablet to dissolve in mouth without chewing the tablet.
  • Never use Donepezil in more than the recommended dose or for longer periods of time without doctor’s consent.

Common Dosage for Donepezil

The drug dosage is decided by the physician based upon:

  • Health status/medical condition of the patient
  • Severity of symptoms
  • Reaction to the first dose
  • History of allergy/drug reactions
  • For patients with dementia associated with Alzheimer’s, the initial recommended dose is 5mg per day in the evening prior to sleep. The dose can be increased to 10mg per day after 4-6 weeks of initial 5mg dose.
  • In patients who do not respond, this dose can further be increased up to 23mg per day once patients have been on a dose of 10mg per day for at least 3 months.
