What is Duofilm?

Duofilm is a keratolytic which works by softening the skin of a wart, causing it to peel off. These drugs are used on hyperkeratotic lesions like corns, warts, psoriasis, chronic dermatitis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, etc. Duofilm helps cause the wart to gradually peel off.

Duofilm Composition

Duofilm contains salicylic acid 16.7% w/w and lactic acid 15.0% w/w.

How does Duofilm work?

  • Duofilm works by increasing the amount of moisture in the skin and dissolving the substance that causes the skin cells to stick together.
  • By its keratolytic action, Duofilm helps to remove the infected tissue.

How to take Duofilm

  • Soak the wart in warm water for 5 minutes and dry the area thoroughly with a clean towel.
  • Apply enough cream/ointment to cover the affected area, and rub in gently.
  • Before using Duofilm gel, apply wet packs to the affected areas for at least 5 minutes. Then apply enough gel to cover the affected areas, and rub in gently.
  • Use Duofilm once a day, before bedtime.
  • It is more effective when applied under occlusive dressing.

Common Dosage of Duofilm

  • For corns and calluses, in adults and children, use the 2 to 10% cream as needed.
  • For common warts, both in adults and children, use the 5 to 26% gel one time a day.
  • Lower concentrations (3–5%) are used in other conditions, e.g. in Whitfield’s ointment.

When to avoid Duofilm

  • Before using Duofilm, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs-NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) or if you have any other allergies.
  • Consult your doctor if you have diabetes, poor blood circulation (peripheral vascular disease) or skin infection.
  • Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially blood vessel disease or diabetes, inflammation, or infection of the skin, influenza (flu) or varicella (chicken pox) or kidney or liver disease.
  • Duofilm is not recommended to be used during or immediately after a viral illness.

Drug interactions to be careful about

  • Do not use Duofilm together with tretinoin topical. Using these medications together may result in skin irritation or cause your skin to dry out.
  • Co-administration of Duofilm and medicines that change urine pH like ammonium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and others is not recommended.
  • Avoid using medicines that treat or prevent blood clots like warfarin along with Duofilm.
  • Do not take methotrexate, pyrazinamide in combination with Duofilm. It may cause more adverse effects.
  • Some medicines for diabetes and gout are to be avoided when taking Duofilm, until and unless your doctor advise you so.
  • Steroid medicines like prednisone or cortisone should be avoided while taking Duofilm.

Precautions when taking Duofilm

  • Use of Duofilm topical in children younger than 2 years of age is not recommended.
  • Do not use Duofilm if the area of skin is irritated, reddened or infected. Do not use on open wounds.
  • Duofilm should not be used on the face or on moles, birthmarks, warts with hair growing from them, or genital or anal warts.
  • Do not inhale the vapour.
  • Be cautious as Duofilm contains rosin, which may cause allergic skin reactions (contact dermatitis).
  • Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they are more likely to have blood circulation problems that may make it more difficult for the skin to heal.
