According to legend, this temple honors the memory of Lord Shiva’s victory over the evil Bhima and he is manifested here in the form of Bhimashankar Jyotirlingam.  It is also said that the sweat which poured from Lord Shiva’s body formed the Bhimarathi River which meets River Krishna in Raichur. A shrine is also devoted to Kamalaja an incarnation of Parvati.

2. Parvati Hill Temple

It is on a hillock in Pune and is of the most sought after locations particularly because of the view it offers. It is also one of the oldest structures and was built during the rule of the Peshwa dynasty. The Hill has 103 steps leading to the top of the hill where temple is situated and according to legend Peshwa purchased the hill from Patil to build a temple for Shiva but he let go be when a consort at the temple cured Peshwa’s mother’s injuries.

One day the goddess saptshrungi devi appeared in his dream and told him if you cannot come to me I will come and that is when a statue of her was found near the mountain he was asked to come to. The presiding deity of this temple is Saptadhrungi in the form of Goddess Chatushringi.

According to sources it was originally a fort which was called Mangalgadh and Mata Parvati danced for Lord Shiva here when he was besotted by her beauty and took her to marry her at Mount Kailash.
