Meghalaya, meaning “Abode of the clouds”, is the wettest region in India. Covered with subtropical forests and caves, its beauty vastly remains untouched. It shares its boundaries with Bangladesh in the south and west, with Assam in the north and east. It is also referred to as the “Scotland of the East”.

There are lots of places to explore some are NohKaLikai falls, Umiam Lake, Ward’s Lake, Shillong view point – laitkor peak, Nohsngithiang Falls, Mawsmai Cave Road, Double Decker Living Root Living, Balphakram National Park, etc.

10. Don Bosco Center for Indigenous Culture

If history and anthropology interest you, this place shouldn’t be missed. This privately-run museum has a good source of the history of north-eastern regions. There’s more to place with its skywalk that offers brilliant views of Shillong.

9. Ialong Park

View of the Myndtu river, green field and hills of the Ialong Park are a treat to a traveller’s eyes. You can enjoy fishing here or take a walk exploring the beauty of nature like never before. The government is taking initiatives to make this park more environmentally relevant. It is located about 10 km from Jowai.

8. Umiam Lake

October – February is the best time to visit this lake which is located in Nongpoh, Meghalaya. You can row a boat embracing a magical sunset or engage in a few water sports this water reservoir offers.

7. Liat Prah Cave

Krem Liat Prah is the longest natural cave in India with a length of about 34 km. Prah is one of the 150 known caves in the Shnongrim Ridge of the East Jaintia Hills district growing by size as nearby caves continue being connected. The most magnificent feature of the cave is its gigantic trunk passage called the Aircraft Hangar.

6. Nohsngithiang Falls

Popular by the name of Seven Sister falls or Mawsmai Falls, these bunch of waterfalls are one of the tallest waterfalls in India. Falling from a height of 1,033 ft, these falls make a stunning backdrop for pictures.

5. Dawki

Dawki has a suspension bridge made in 1932 by the British over the Umngot river. The location of the place is in between India and Bangladesh and is one of the few road border crossings. 4. Mawphlang Sacred Forest

A local Khasi guide can probably unveil the mystery of this forest with trees more than 1000 years old. It has several medicinal plants, Rudraksh trees, orchids, pitcher plants, ferns and more. It is also believed that a deity known as Labasa inhabits the forest which protects the community taking the form of a tiger or leopard.

3. Laitlum Canyons

Literally translating to “end of hills”, the canyon justifies its name. It is also known as “Sit Valley” by the locals and is a good place to hike. You can sit back at the edge and enjoy a spectacular view of Meghalaya. If you decide to tread a little further, a steep flight of steps will lead you to a local village Rasong, which has an old-fashioned ropeway pulley as a mode of transport.

2. Balpakram National Park

Lying close to the international boundary shared with Bangladesh, the Balpakram National Prk is often compared to the Grand Canyon of the USA. Also known as the abode of perpetual winds or land of spirits, this park is engulfed in mystery. Stories say that the Schimawallichi tree acquired depression for some unknown reason and if one tree fell for some reason, another would follow suit. It is also said that the spirits of the dead rest here.

1. Living Root Bridge in Mawlynnong Village

Undoubtedly one of the most popular attractions in Meghalaya is the Living Root Bridge. Dense tropical forests covered in cloud and rain make this location out of a fantasy movie. The Khasi tribe has trained roots of ancient rubber trees to form a bridge. It takes about 15 years for a new bridge to take the weight of people crossing it and many of these bridges are centuries old.
