What is Foracort?

Foracort is a combination of two drugs – Formoterol and Budesonide used for the treatment of bronchial asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It is available in inhaler form for patients suffering from shortness of breath and wheezing. It should be used regularly for effective functioning (maintenance treatment) and not for treatment of acute asthma attacks.

Uses of Foracort

Foracort is used only for the maintenance treatment of Asthma and COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It should not be used in acute attacks.

How does Foracort work?

Foracort contains a combination of two medicines – Formoterol and Budesonide. Formoterol is a long acting bronchodilator which relaxes and widens the airways and makes it easier for breathing. Budesonide is a corticosteroid which reduces inflammation in the body especially in the airways and thus making breathing easier.


How to Take Foracort ?

  • Foracort is available in inhaler form. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Inhale this medicine as prescribed by your doctor.
  • After each use of Foracort inhaler, rinse your mouth with water to prevent infections of mouth and throat especially fungal infections.
  • Do not stop using Foracort suddenly even if you feel better as it might worsen the condition or may lead to withdrawal effects.

Common Dosage for Foracort

The drug dosage is decided by the physician based upon:

  • Health status/medical condition of the patient
  • Severity of symptoms
  • Reaction to the first dose
  • History of allergy/drug reactions
  • Foracort should be administered in the dose of 2 inhalations (80/4.5 or 160/4.5) per day (morning and evening approximately 12 hours apart) in inhalational form depending upon the severity of condition.
