Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort
Popularly known by the locals as ‘Amer Fort’, Amber Fort is an architectural marvel constructed by Raja Mansingh in 1592. Made from red sandstone and marble, the fort has 4 entrances and 4 courtyards. Located 11 km from the city centre, this historical site is a blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture. This fort also offers elephant rides and a light and sound show in the evening.
Jaigarh Fort is around 2 km uphill from Amber Fort and can be reached by foot or by taxi or auto from Amber Fort. Housing the world’s largest canon, Jaigarh Fort used to be a defensive fort of the Rajputs containing weapons and other artillery.
Nahargarh Fort is located uphill of Amber Fort and can be reached by taxis, autos or jeeps available on the main road outside Amber Fort. Constructed as a defensive fort, this mesmerizing site offers a breath-taking view of the entire city of Jaipur. While you are there, check out the 12 queen boudoirs and the beautiful murals.
Located in the heart of Jaipur, Hawa Mahal is a mesmerizing palace built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. Rightfully translating to the ‘Palace of the Winds’, the five-storeyed palace has a total of 953 windows to provide proper ventilation to the Royal women of the Rajput family who used to watch over the city from this palace.
Situated quite close to the Hawa Mahal, the Johri or Johari Bazaar is one of the most famous bazaars in Jaipur. It has everything from great street food to clothes and accessories. This bazaar is especially famous for ethnic handmade precious and semi-precious jewellery. You can also buy a lot of souvenirs from this place like the traditional Rajasthani Lehengas and Juttis. It is recommended that this market should be visited around evening when it starts to get a little dark so you could get a taste of how pretty and pink the streets of Jaipur look when lit at night.
