How does Ivermectin work?

  • Ivermectin binds selectively and with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels of the parasite. This binding causes an increase in the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions which leads to paralysis and death of the parasite.
  • Ivermectin also act as an agonist of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), thereby disrupting GABA-mediated CNS neurosynaptic transmission. It may also impair normal intrauterine development of a parasite and may inhibit their release from the uteri of gravid female worms.

How to take Ivermectin?

  • Ivermectin is administered orally in the form of tablets with a full glass of water.
  • This medicine can be used topically or via injection.
  • This medicine is taken on an empty stomach at least an hour before a meal.

Common dosage of Ivermectin

  • For river blindness, dosage for adults and teenagers is 150 micrograms per kilogram (kg) of body weight as a single dose. For children, the dose is 150 mcg per kg of body weight as a single dose.
  • For Strongyloidiasis, adults and teenagers dose is 200 mcg per kg of body weight as a single dose. For children weighing 15 kg or more, the usual dose is 200 mcg per kg of body weight as a single dose.

When to avoid Ivermectin & Precautions to take?

  • Avoid using Ivermectin if you are allergic to it or any other inactive ingredients present along with it.
  • Consumption of alcohol is not recommended while receiving Ivermectin.
  • Increased concentration of this medicine and can cause skin rash, headache, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
  • Patients being treated for onchocerciasis may experience mazzotti reaction which are cutaneous and systemic adverse effect.
  • Pretreatment assessment for loiasis is recommended for patients with significant exposure to endemic areas and when treated with Ivermectin for onchocerciasis due to an increased risk of fatal encephalopathy.
  • Ivermectin is contraindicated for use in children below 5 years of age with body weight less than 15 kg.

  • Musculoskeletal reactions- Myalgia.
