What happens when India’s two most revered professions – Cricket and Bollywood come together?
A celebration of epic proportions – one that cannot be matched!
The biopic of one of India’s most successful captains – M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story opens to a rousing reception on over 4,500 screens across the country today. Playing the lead role of Dhoni in the movie is the young Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput.
While it is quite obvious that the movie will follow M.S. Dhoni’s epic journey from being a Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) to becoming the man who banished India’s World Cup woes after 28 years, there are some unknown things about the star batsman’s life that the movie will talk about.
Here are 5 things to look forward to in the “Captain Cool” biopic.
1. Unadulterated Story Line
The story of the movie is completely untouched and uninfluenced by any, not even by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. In the words of Director Neeraj Pandey, M.S Dhoni had no say in the script and everything in the movie are from an extensive study of his background by a team of researchers. This means that every single thing in his journey as a Ticket Examiner in South Eastern Railways to becoming the captain of Indian Cricket team and lifting the World Cup is documented from real-life events.
Simply put, no added flavours!
2. Tragic Love
M.S. Dhoni is married to Sakshi Singh Rawat since 2010. However, not many know of the star batsman’s first love that ended in a tragedy. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s relationship with a girl named Priyanka Jha came to a tragic end when she was killed in a car accident while Dhoni was away playing for India in Kenya. The love between the duo is captured on screen in the biopic.
The song ‘Jab Tak’ shows Dhoni (played by Sushant Singh Rajput) romancing his lady love one last time before flying off to play for India.
3. Long Hair Woes
The explosive wicketkeeper-batsman was admired by all during his initial years in the Indian cricket team when he sported a long mane. It was said that even Pervez Musharraf, the then President of Pakistan praised Dhoni for his hair when India went to Pakistan in 2004 for playing 5 ODIs and 3 Test matches. However, the flamboyant striker shocked everyone when he cut away his long locks in 2007. While there were many linkups of the haircut to his relationship with Bollywood flame Deepika Padukone, no confirmations cropped up.

4. The Controversial Video Conference Call
While Dhoni has been one of the most loved cricketers by teammates and cricket fans around the country, there are still some who hold a few grudges against him. The trailer of the movie shows M.S. Dhoni in a video conference call with National Selectors making his point for the exclusion of three senior players from the squad. Though nothing more is revealed in the trailer, it waits to be seen if the film gives out the names of these three players. It could trigger a new controversy of sorts if the names are really revealed or signs of them are picked up by the audience.
5. ‘Six’y Finish
The biopic which runs a length 3 hours and 6 minutes has its climax set at the 2011 World Cup when Dhoni’s mighty six over long-on exalts the spirits of an entire nation waiting for a 28-year-long World Cup redemption. The raw emotions of a jam-packed Wankhede Stadium waiting to witness history will give goosebumps to every cricket fan watching the movie in theatres across the country.
Though it is not certain whether the M.S. Dhoni movie will live up to its expectations in the box office, one thing is for sure. Bollywood and Cricket is a deadly combo which joined together can have a telling effect on the lives of people in our country.
And, M.S Dhoni: The Untold Story is the ‘untold’ proof of that!
Update: The movie has got amazing responses from movie-goers who have rated it an average of 4 stars out of 5.
