What is Melatonin?
Melatonin is a pineal hormone. It is serotegenic (affecting serotonin). Melatonin induces pigment lightening in skin cells and suppresses ovarian functions; it also serves a role in regulating biological rhythms and shows promise in the treatment of jet lag and other sleep disturbances. It is secreted predominantly at night in both day- and night-active. Exogenous Melatonin increases sleepiness and may potentiate sleep when administered to good sleepers attempting to sleep during daylight hours at a time when endogenous Melatonin levels are low.

How does Melatonin work?
- Natural melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland in the brain.
- It is produced from the amino acid tryptophan and is then released into the blood and cerebrospinal fluid.
- It sends messages to the melatonin receptor agonist in the brain and other areas of the body to help control the sleep and wake cycles.
- When taken as a supplement (artificial melatonin), it mimics the work of natural melatonin.
How to take Melatonin?
- Melatonin comes in different forms like in liquid form or capsules or tablets.
- Take Melatonin at the correct time. If you take it for trouble in sleeping then controlled release formulation should be taken before going to bed.
- In the case of the sublingual form, which will directly go into the bloodstream or liquid form, you may take it about 30 minutes before going to bed.
