What is Ranitidine?

Ranitidine is an antagonist of histamine H2receptors which inhibits stomach hydrochloric acid secretion in the treatment of peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux and is administered orally, intramuscularly, or intravenously. It prevents secretion of excess gastric acid.

Uses of Ranitidine

Ranitidine is used:

  • In the treatment of peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease.
  • Tentatively effective for curing hives.
  • To treat ulcers in the stomach and intestines.
  • It also treats Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (where the stomach produces too much acid).

How does Ranitidine work?

  • Ranitidine blocks the production of acid by acid-producing cells in the stomach.

Common Dosage of Ranitidine

  • Ranitidine comes as a tablet, an effervescent tablet, effervescent granules, and a syrup to take by mouth.
  • It is usually taken once or twice a day. To prevent symptoms, it is taken 30 to 60 minutes before eating or drinking foods that cause heartburn.
  • Ranitidine is usually taken once a day at bedtime or two to four times a day.
  • Usual oral doses for treating ulcers and GERD are 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg at bedtime. The maintenance dose is 150 mg daily.
