About Vizag

Vizag is also known as Visakhapatnam and Waltair. It is the largest city in Andhra Pradesh and is the Eastern naval Command of the Indian Navy. Located between the Eastern Ghats and the coast of Bay of Bengal, the place boasts of stunning beaches. Its history dates back to the 6th century BCE when it was a part of the Kalinga Kingdom with several dynasties taking over the place with time. Archaeological evidences claim the present city to be built around the 11th and 12th centuries.

10. Vuda Park

Vuda Park is located in proximity to Ramakrishna Beach. The musical fountain and skating rink make this park a great place to be visited with kids.

9. Submarine Museum

This museum is located inside an actual submarine, INS Kurusura. The museum includes pictures, artefacts and articles that showcase patriotism of warriors.

8. Katiki Falls

Katiki Falls originate from the river Gosthani and is about 50 ft high. The lush greens and a small trek up to this place adds an element of adventure and fun. You can also buy fresh jungle honey here.

7. Simhachalan Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Narsimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The temple has detailed prayer routines for all days of the year and is a treasure for traditional Vaishnavite culture. The statue of the deity is covered with sandalwood paste most of the year and is visible in its true form only 12 hours per year. The stone carvings and ornate shrine make it a splendid place to be visited.

6. Dolphin’s Nose

Dolphin’s Nose is a 174m high rocky headland the shape of which resembles to the nose of a dolphin. This protruding land in the Bay of Bengal makes it look fascinating. A light house on the top of a hill and a secluded beach called Yarada behind the hill makes the place even more appealing.

5. Borra Caves

Borra Caves are located in the Anathagiri hills which were discovered in the year 1807. These caves are one of the largest and are situated at an elevation of 705 meters. These Karstic limestone structures extend 80m deep, also making it the deepest cave in India. Natural skylights merge with the dark to form kaleidoscopic imagery that stun any visitor.

4. Ramakrishna Beach

It is one of the most popular beaches in Vizag and one can spend a relaxed time here. A stroll on the beach or watching the sun set are beautiful activities one can indulge in.

3. Kailasagiri

Kailasagiri is a hill top park at a height of 360 feet overlooking beaches and forests. It gives a bird’s eye view of the bay and also offers leisure activities like paragliding. With two huge statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, there’s also a religious sentiment attached with the place.

2. Araku Valley

Araku valley is an unexplored hill station and a popular weekend getaway. A train journey to this place is fascinating with 58 tunnels and 84 bridges. The train is one of a kind with large glass windows on the sides and also on the roof! This unique experience must not be missed and is strongly recommended. A visit to the Museum of Tribal Arts and Kartiki Waterfall is a must. You can enjoy the taste of aromatic coffee and even take a trek if you like.

1. Buddhist Excavation Sites

Vizag is home to a lot of Buddhist excavation sites like Havikonda, Thotlakonda, Bojjanakonda and Salihundam. These age-old excavations have revealed many stupas, chaityas and antiquities. Andhra Pradesh state houses nearly 150 Buddhist sites many of which date back to the 2nd century BCE. These sites have very high religious and historical importance and are definitely worth a visit.

This city in Andhra Pradesh is also known as Bheemili, named after Bheem from Mahabharta. The river Gosthani merges into the Bay of Bengal at a beautiful point here and the red earth hillocks make for a great view.

Panchadarla Shiva Temple

Built by the Eastern Chalukya Cholas in the ninth century with some inscriptions dating back to 1407. The temple however, has been neglected and is not very well maintained.

Kondakarla Ava

It is one of the largest freshwater lake in the country and is located at a distance of 50 km from Vizag. It also comprises of an endangered forest type.

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park

It is located in the Kambalakonda Reserve Forest and is the third largest zoo in the country. Surrounded by Eastern Ghats on three sides and the Bay of Bengal on one, this zoo is one of a kind and deserves a visit.
