10. Thamel

Thamel is a commercial neighborhood of Nepal. With various shops, restaurants and markets lining the place, it is one of the most popular places to be at when in Kathmandu. It also has a number of bars that one can visit and have a great time. The locality is also surrounded by beggars and thugs, it is advised to take care of your belongings and not give out any money to them as Nepalis find it demeaning.

9. Garden of Dreams

The Garden of Dreams was built in early 1920 and was known to be the most sophisticated gardens of that time. This neo classical historical garden reflects six seasons of Nepal and features distinct verandas, pergolas, urns and birdhouses. Created by late Field Marshal Kaiser Sumsher Rana, this place is popular for strolls and picnics.

8. National Museum of Nepal

National Museum of Nepal is the largest museum of Nepal established in 1928 by General Bhimsen Thapa. It houses art, a firearm collection, stone sculptures, carvings, metal works and different parts of Nepal and its cultures.

7. Boudhanath Stupa

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Boudhanath stupa is one of the largest stupas in the world. The complex has 50 Gompas that house monks and Tibetan refugees in large numbers. It lies on an ancient trade route from Tibet and the massive design of the place is truly mesmerizing. The stupa is said to entomb remains of Kassapa Buddha and has many legends are associated with the construction of this place.

6. Swayambhunath Temple

Swayambhunath Temple is located on a hilltop and is revered as the most sacred and oldest religious places in Kathmandu. A climb of 365 steps leads one to shrines and smaller temples along with a fantastic view of the thunderbolt scepter. You can enjoy the historical significance of the place in the museum and also have a look at ancient sacred artefacts.

5. Narayanhiti Palace

The Narayanhiti palace was constructed in 1961 by King Mahendra. The complex served as the residence and workplace for the monarch and was reopened as a museum in 2007. Exquisite banquet halls, wall hangings and the throne are a must see while here.

4. Pashupatinath Temple

Home to Nepal’s national deity, the Pashupatinath Temple is on the UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located on the banks of river Bagmati and the extensive complex features temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions raised over centuries. What adds to the allure of the temple is the copper, gold and silver covering of the roof and the doors.

3. Durbar Square – Hanuman Dhoka, Kumari House

The Durbar Square lies in front of the old royal palace and is also known as the Hanuman Dhoka Sqaure. The large statue of Lord Hanuman, Kumari House, King Tribhuvan Museum and several temples line up the complex and make for a popular tourist attraction.

2. Shechen Monastery

Shechen Monastery holds a high name in Tibetan culture as it is one of the six “mother” monasteries of the Nyingma tradition. There are more than 300 monks in the monastery who teach music, dance, painting and Buddhist philosophy. Striking architecture of the monastery makes it for a captivating attraction in Kathmandu.
