The story behind the inception of Lakme as a beauty brand is interesting. The then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru personally requested JRD Tata to set up India's own cosmetics company to stop the drain of precious foreign exchange by Indian women in their spree to shop the best beauty products from abroad. Subsequently, Lakme started as a subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills in 1952 and was named after the French Opera Lakme. Simone Tata, a graduate from Geneva University joined the company and went on to become its chairperson in 1982. In 1996, HUL took over Tata's stakes in Lakme for Rs.200 crores.
